Death in the Kitchen

Cooking causes about 4 million premature deaths, with the majority occurring in poor and developing countries in Africa and Asia. (See the chart below)

These countries face a double whammy of pollution, as people here pay the price of pollution outside and inside the house. Women and children are particularly impacted by indoor pollution, with indoor cooking-related deaths being the world's third-biggest cause of early mortality for women and children.

The leading cause of indoor pollution is cooking using solid or dirty fuels, such as wood or charcoal. Currently, Africa has about 220 million people without access to cleaner fuels.

Not all fuels are the same

▶ Many of these countries are encouraged to transition to renewable energy, but quick, ready-made, and tested solutions are needed to prevent these unnecessary deaths.

▶ While many rich countries still have fossil fuels as part of their long-term strategy, poor and developing countries are being pushed more aggressively towards renewables. Moreover, not all fossil fuels are the same.

The top priority of the poor and developing countries should be to reduce these deaths. If promoting oil and gas (LPG, etc.) use in their homes is necessary to achieve this, then they should do so.

The urgency should be to save the lives of women and children first and then consider renewables.
