According to the Ghana Energy Statistics report, biomass energy is widely used by many households and commercial entities. It accounts for about 40% of the primary energy supply of Ghana. It was estimated that household consumption of biomass was about 86% in 2019. Indeed, the demand for wood fuel puts Ghana’s forests under immense pressure and has severe consequences on the ecosystem as a whole. The deforestation rate of 2% in Ghana is the highest in Africa, with current levels of wood fuel consumption far exceeding forest growth. The aim of this project is to reduce wood fuel (firewood and charcoal) consumption by households by distributing and using improved cook stoves (ICSs), thus the program contributes to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) and provides a healthy environment, reduces illness, and death associated with household air pollution (HAP) and contributes to the sustainable development of Ghana. Clean cooking is one of the 25 conditional mitigation programs of action Ghana tends to implement in its NDC, through which Ghana seeks to promote social inclusion, sustainable energy transition, and smart communities while creating over 24,000 jobs and generating as much as 4.2Mtons of CO2 emission reduction. By replacing beneficiary households' inefficient cook stoves with the project ICSs, it is expected that this project will help control the rapid forest loss and improve the quality of life of Ghanaians.
