What are Nature-based Solutions and Natural Climate Solutions?

Nature-based Solutions (NBS) and Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) are related concepts that leverage the power of nature to address various environmental challenges, including climate change. However, they differ in their scope and specific objectives:

NBS are “actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems, that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits” (IUCN). In summary, Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) are a subcategory of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) focused on avoiding greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and/or increasing carbon storage in landscapes, particularly in respect of using climate or carbon finance to do so.
