Majority of Nigerian households use wood for cooking (62%) on traditional firewood stoves. About 133 million Nigerian suffer multi-dimensional poverty of which cooking energy poverty is one of them. According to latest available data, smoke from kitchens kill 77,000 Nigerian annually of which 52,000 are children. Nigeria loses 3.5% of its forests annually. This approximates to 350,000 - 400,000 hectares per year. The widespread use of wood for cooking contributes a sizeable share of deforestation. Presently, emissions from cooking contributes over 55 million tonnes of CO2e representing about 16% of total national greenhouse gas emissions.
The goal of the National Clean Cooking Policy is to achieve universal access to clean cooking energy solutions for households and institutions by 2030.
Energy Mix 2030 target includes: 54% LPG, 3% Biogas, 5% biofuels, 13% efficient cookstoves, 5% briquettes and 12% MECS.
