Due to the urgency of climate action, the report emphasises the importance of the immediate implementation of emission reduction and avoidance projects with low risk of reversal, such as clean cookstove distribution and renewable energy adoption. These types of offsets will play a key role through to 2050.

Companies should gradually transition towards carbon removal offsets, with the goal of relying solely on removal projects by 2050 at the latest. Given that reduction/avoidance credits currently represent over 80% of carbon credits, a significant increase in the proportion of credits generated from removal projects like afforestation and reforestation is essential.

Finally, a shift to carbon removal methods with durable storage is needed. The report recognizes the importance of nature-based solutions, and solutions with a higher risk of reversal like reforestation are necessary at first. However, a gradual shift towards those with lower risk and long-term storage, such as biochar, is crucial.
