US-based carbon registry Verra is inviting proposals from validation/verification bodies (VVBs) to review a proposed new methodology that covers more efficient cookstoves and other thermal applications.
The methodology would apply to projects that involve the dissemination of improved thermal energy generation units, including cookstoves, dryers, ovens and heaters, Verra said.
“Through enhanced efficiency and/or fuel switching, which may involve the replacement of fossil fuels and non-renewable biomass, these units can reduce greenhouse gas emissions across households, communities, institutions, and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises,” the standard said.
The proposed methodology builds on three existing methodologies currently approved for use within Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard programme, and “incorporates current best practices and streamlined approaches in project implementation and monitoring”, Verra said.
The methodology has been developed by Colombian consultancy Atmosphere Alternative, which will also lead the VVB assessment.
The RFP requests interested VVBs to submit their proposals by September 22, with the assessment process once a reviewer has been chosen expected to start in mid-October and last for three to four months.
