Emelyne Nyanzira from the Kirundo province, in Burundi, built a house thanks to the income from selling improved cookstoves. Along with 12 other members of the indigenous Batwa community, members of the local "Dutegure Kazoza" association, she started producing and selling cookstoves rather than non-profitable pots. Thanks to this new business, they can now pay for livestock, health insurance, and education for their children.
Since July 2021, over 168,122 improved cookstoves have been sold, reducing charcoal use by 30% and firewood consumption by 50% compared to traditional stoves, thereby promoting a more sustainable energy alternative.
